Bridges Scholarship Recipients
Argenis Ferrebus – D3 – Nova Southeastern University
Maria Ferrer-Lugo – D3 - University of Minnesota School of Dentistry
I hope this letter finds you well. My name is Maria Ferrer-Lugo and I am currently a third-year dental student at the University of Minnesota. I would like to express my gratitude for the scholarship I received.
This scholarship is very significant to me as it allows me to focus on furthering my education without completely focusing on the financial commitment that dental education brings.
As a Hispanic female and dental student, I have been doing as much as I can to work within the Hispanic and Latino community to get more access to care and expand oral health education. I am very passionate about this and would love to continue working to close the gap within the access to dental care and help with any financial and language barriers. This scholarship allows me to focus on this path to serving the community as a dental professional.
I am truly thankful for this financial award, and I strive to continue to expand my dental knowledge and allow me to continue to use my background and experience to help the community.
Once again, I truly appreciate your support in my education, and I am honored to have received this award.
Cariana Guerra - D3 - University of Texas Health Sciences - Houston
During my time at UTHealth School of Dentistry in Houston, I have fueled my passion to serve the Hispanic community through the Hispanic Student Dental Association (HSDA). Being part of a local chapter that promotes students like me to reach national organizations like yours is empowering and fulfilling.
Being raised in a predominately Hispanic community in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV), I have witnessed first-hand the challenges my community faces when it comes to accessing quality and affordable oral health care. For that reason, your support in me and my education is a step closer to my goal in going back home to provide the dental care I believe families in the RGV deserve.
Thank you again for your support!
Jeniffer Lacayo – D1 – Roseman University
Joselene Piedra Rodriguez - D4 - Oregon Health & Science University
Luis Romero - D3 - University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine
This scholarship has provided a big boost to my higher education. After spending time serving communities in Connecticut, I’ve realized the real need for better access to oral healthcare, especially for those facing language barriers and lack of transportation. Even as a student, I am committed to making an impact and building connections with others in the field to bring about lasting change. I’m excited to continue this journey of educating children and families about proper oral care and fostering healthier lifestyles. I hope my story and those like mine can continue to inspire generations to come to fight for our community to have a healthier lifestyle and a smile they can be proud of.
Thank you again for this honor HDAF and Crest Oral-B.
Evelyn Silvas – D2 – University of California, San Francisco
Emily Barcenas Perez - D2 - USC Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry
Iman Farrah Evans - D4 - University of California Los Angeles
Firstly, I would like to start this letter off with a thank you. I am very appreciative of the honor that has been bestowed upon me and your organization’s recognition and investment in my future in dentistry. I would like to introduce myself as a nontraditional applicant, a fourth-year dental student and an advocate for health equity. As a student who is now in her final year of school, when I look back on my accomplishments it shows that I have gotten involved with organizations that have allowed me to work towards mitigating social determinants of health which disproportionately affect Hispanic, Black and rural populations.
Without these organizations, I would not have been able to have an impact on these groups, which are the most in need. Sponsors such as yourself who support students who want to elevate healthcare standards as integral in supporting underrepresented students like me to help make that change. As I transition into making the most of my final year of dental school, I will take the experiences that I have had with HSDA, Scrub Hub, Students for Inclusion, Diversity & Equity at UCLA and many more with me as I choose where to practice and how to interact with the various groups that I will serve. Again, thank you immensely for seeing in me what so few have acknowledged—a person with endless potential, unwavering resilience and a bright future.

Aimee Beste - DH2 - Phoenix College, Arizona
Victoria Boreman - DH1 - University of Texas Health Center, Houston
This scholarship will help me immensely. I am currently living close to campus but do not have a job as our program is Monday through Friday 8 am – 5 pm. This scholarship will not only help me with housing, but I also am looking forward to using this scholarship to go on a mission trip to Guatemala to help the local community with dental oral health. Again, thank you so much for selecting me.
Arielle Bronston – BSDH - Phoenix College, Arizona
I grew up on the Navajo Reservation, and on the native land, many families are not educated on oral hygiene. As a kid, I did not know how to properly take care of my teeth and gums until a huge dental van came to my school and showed many kids how to brush and floss their teeth. This has inspired me to want to educate and give oral care in low-income communities. So, here I am in my second year in dental hygiene school.
Once again, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for choosing me for this scholarship. Your support has made a significant difference in my life, and I am truly thankful for it. Receiving this award has allowed me to continue my education to pursue a career in dental hygiene.
Ruth Castillo-Martinez - DH2 - University of Tennessee
Entering my senior year at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, this scholarship is instrumental in alleviating the financial burden associated with the Dental Hygiene Program. With your assistance, I can focus more on my studies, rather than worrying about tuition fees or other costs.
This scholarship not only provides financial support but has also inspired me to get more involved with community events surrounding the Hispanic community. I am committed to making the most of this opportunity and hope to give back to my community in the future, just as you have given to me. Most recently, I visited a predominantly Hispanic middle school to educate kids and parents about the importance of regular dental care. Also, an event, funded by our university, will enable kids from this community to achieve better oral health, and I will provide care at this event.
Thank you once again for your kindness and for believing in students like me, a first-generation college student. Your generosity has made a significant impact on my life, and I am truly grateful for your support.

Luis Vidaurri – Tufts University - Ortho Residency
Erika Magana - D4 - Tufts University, School of Dental Medicine
This scholarship signifies more than just financial support; it represents an endorsement of my commitment to serving the Hispanic community. As a 3rd year dental student, I am acutely aware of the disparities in oral health care that affect underserved populations. With this scholarship, I am empowered to further my education and training, equipping me with the knowledge and skills necessary to make a meaningful impact.
The vision of the HDAF, “to advance healthier Hispanic communities through oral health,” deeply resonates with my personal and professional goals. I am committed to advancing this vision by actively participating in community outreach programs, providing education on the importance of oral health, and delivering high-quality dental care to those in need. I plan to continue to be engaged in initiatives that promote preventive care and raise awareness about the critical link between oral health and overall well-being.
As I progress in my career, I will continue to advocate for equitable access to dental services and work towards reducing health disparities. This scholarship serves as a reminder of the importance of giving back to the community and motivates me to lead by example, fostering a culture of health and wellness within the Hispanic community.
Thank you once again for your generous support. Your investment in my education will have a lasting impact, not only on my future but also on the countless lives I will touch through my work in advancing oral health.
Stephanie Ferrer - D3 - University of Pennsylvania
As a passionate advocate for promoting dental health among Hispanic populations, this scholarship will significantly alleviate the financial burden of dental school, allowing me to focus more on my studies and clinical training. This support will empower me to pursue my dream of becoming a dentist dedicated to improving oral health outcomes in underserved Hispanic communities.
I am deeply inspired by the mission of the Hispanic Dental Association Foundation to advance the oral health of Hispanic communities through scholarship and leadership opportunities. With your generous support, I am committed to furthering this mission by actively participating in community outreach programs, advocating for oral health education, and providing compassionate dental care to those in need.
Your belief in my potential and investment in my education reaffirm my commitment to making a meaningful impact in the field of dentistry. Once again, thank you for this incredible opportunity. I am excited about the possibilities ahead and look forward to keeping you updated on my progress.
Alyssa Garcia – DH2 - Carrington College
Bernard Silverstein - D4 - UNC Adams School of Dentistry, Chapel Hill
As mentioned in my application and video submission, my involvement with my local HSDA chapter stems from my personal background as a Latino student. I proudly joined UNC’s HSDA chapter in my first year of dental school as a general member and eventually climbed my way up to serve as a clinic coordinator, vice president and now in my current role as president. My eagerness to be involved with this organization stems from the struggles and inequities my mother and many of her family members have experienced receiving healthcare in this country as immigrants from Ecuador. For this reason, it has been my personal mission and goal while working with HSDA at UNC to re-establish our partnership with a community health clinic so our members can provide free dental services to the Hispanic population of Siler City, NC. This Fall, all the handwork my chapter has put into getting this clinic back up and running will finally come to fruition and we could not be happier to begin seeing patients once again.
Again, I would like to take the time to thank everyone on the committee for reviewing my application and selecting me as one of the recipients for this scholarship. My journey in higher education has posed many challenges, one of the biggest obstacles being finances. As an only child whose parents never attended college and receives minimal financial support for my endeavors, this award relieves a substantial burden. The feelings this scholarship evoked when I received my acceptance call is something I hope other individuals can experience for years to come. Once I am able to give back to the foundation for other students, I am more than happy to, now knowing how impactful this has been for me and my journey.

Receiving this scholarship is deeply meaningful to me. It not only reaffirms my commitment to serving others but also provides invaluable support as I continue my education and professional journey. Being recognized for my dedication and hard work is truly humbling, and it motivates me to strive even harder to make a positive impact in the dental and Hispanic communities.
This scholarship will enable me to further the HDAF's vision of " advancing healthier Hispanic communities through oral health.” With this support, I can focus on expanding my knowledge and skills, particularly in pediatric dentistry, orthodontics, and myofunctional therapy. I am dedicated to addressing the unique oral health challenges faced by Hispanic communities and promoting preventive care and early intervention.
Thank you for believing in my potential and helping me pursue my dreams.
Erendira Palomino-Razo - D4 - Midwestern University College of Dental Medicine Illinois
My journey to dentistry has been long but giving up was never a thought. I overcame many obstacles and as a 4th year dental student, I am very close to my end goal. I aspire to continue to develop myself professionally and as a leader. I look forward to becoming a great Latino female dentist and a future role model for other future dental professionals. I sincerely appreciate your generosity and support. I hope to someday in the near future God allows me to help other students fulfill their education goals as your organization helped me.
Zydrune Rudaviciute - D4 - Midwestern University College of Dental Medicine
Growing up as an undocumented in an underserved community, I witnessed firsthand the challenges many faces in accessing adequate healthcare, particularly dental care. My desire to pursue a career in dentistry is deeply rooted in these experiences, and I am dedicated to using my skills to bridge the gap in oral healthcare disparities. Your generous scholarship will allow me to focus more on my studies and further my involvement in community outreach programs, including volunteering at free dental clinics and participating in educational initiatives to promote oral health awareness.
I am committed to advancing the vision of the Hispanic Dental Association Foundation to foster healthier Hispanic communities through improved oral health. With this scholarship, I am more determined than ever to contribute to a future where all individuals, regardless of socioeconomic status, have access to quality dental care. Thank you for believing in my potential and supporting my journey. I look forward to continuing the legacy of service and making a lasting impact on the lives of those who need it most.
Cristina Morales – DH1 - College of DuPage
This scholarship means that the path to dental hygiene is still a possibility for me, when a few months ago it didn’t feel achievable financially. I will continue to further the vision of the Hispanic Dental Association Foundation of “advancing healthier Hispanic communities through oral health.”, by promoting preventative care in a culturally competent way, by ensuring patients are provided an overall elevated standard of care. This will include educating patients to make informed decisions about one’s oral health and reaching a larger audience of all ages by volunteering to speak upon dental care education to provide exposure for future patients.
Once again, without the assistance that has been provided to me by the Delta Dental of Illinois Foundation/Hispanic Dental Association Foundation scholarship I wouldn’t be one step closer to serving communities in preventative care, which has been a true passion of mine!
With gratitude,
Paulina Reynoso - BSDH - Southern Illinois University
I am currently about to enter my senior year in dental hygiene at Southern Illinois University. It has definitely been a challenge, but wisdom is certainly being gained. I am a full-time student, I am involved in a local church and I have managed to maintain a GPA of 3.9. I am humbled and extremely grateful for scholarships that make it possible for me to pursue my dreams. I would not be here if it was not for the help that I am receiving and I appreciate it greatly. I am a first-generation college student that comes from a very traditional Mexican household and so going away for school is not very typical. It is both a sacrifice and blessing that I get to chase my dreams and every day that passes I am closer to achieving them.
This is a monumental time for myself, and my family and I appreciate scholarships like these who pave the way for my success. I hope to continue furthering the Hispanic Dental Association Foundation’s vision to keep prioritizing oral health in the Hispanic community. Working as a dental assistant has enabled me to see the importance of absolutely loving what you do and who you do it for. I particularly love translating, there were various instances when a Hispanic patient had dental anxiety due to the language barrier and there is nothing more special than seeing the relief in patients’ eyes and enabling them to feel assured. I realized my power but also the great need of Hispanics in the dental field. I had also realized that being bilingual is a great resource, but an even greater resource is being able to have my own patients and educate them in preventive health.
After I graduate, I plan to work clinically but my heart is definitely rooted in dental public health. I plan to go back to my predominantly Hispanic neighborhood to educate my community and give them access to high quality oral treatment. I have seen a lot of Hispanics neglect dentistry due to the language barrier, the lack of funds and because they did not think it was necessary. I want to combat that mentality and emphasize the need to prioritize oral health which starts with proper dental hygiene education. Ultimately, I hope to start my own oral health program targeting minorities by offering information, resources, and hopefully dental treatment at a reduced cost to save pain and money.
Once again, I thank you for your contribution and investment in my future. I truly appreciate it.
Linda Urbina-Perez - DH2 - Malcolm X College
Paige Madden – D3 - The Midwestern University College of Dental Medicine - Illinois

The journey has not been easy, and receiving this support eases financial burdens and validates my efforts. It encourages me not to give up and to strive for even greater achievements. I hope to inspire more students to see what we can accomplish through the Hispanic Dental Association Foundation and to show my patients how much we care about achieving their optimal oral health. Having more dentists who speak their language will help them feel more comfortable and build trust.
The vision of the Hispanic Dental Association Foundation (HDAF) to promote healthier Hispanic communities through oral health deeply resonates with me. Growing up in a Hispanic community, I witnessed firsthand the disparities in oral healthcare access and their profound impact on individuals and families. This scholarship empowers me to continue promoting oral health equity within Hispanic communities.
I am deeply grateful for their generosity and pledge to honor their support by dedicating myself wholeheartedly to achieving oral health equity for Hispanic communities. Together, we can make a tangible difference in the lives of countless individuals, empowering them to lead healthier and happier lives.
